NERC Decries Absence of Renewable Energy Policy in Nigeria

Ejiofor Alike
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has decried the absence of a policy on renewable energy in the country, saying the development is retarding the contribution of solar energy to the power supply.
Speaking at the Nigeria Photovoltaic Energy Conference, Solarcon 2014, held in Lagos at the weekend, NERC’s Deputy General Manager in charge of Research and Development, Mr. Imamudeen Talba said Nigeria had all the potentials for solar power but lacked policies and legislations to drive this renewable energy option.
“The problem we have in solar in Nigeria, particularly renewable is absence of policies, regulatory challenges and other challenges. Why is it that we do not have adequate solar projects in Nigeria, despite all the potentials that we have? When we go to international for a, we find ourselves embarrassed because most of the West African countries have structured processes for renewable. Some countries have gone to the extent of making legislations for renewable; some countries have policies for renewable energy but Nigeria does not have,” he explained.
He said grid-connected solar power faced a lot of challenges in the country, adding that grid supplies are usually the cheapest option in areas with high load densities, as well as in areas near the grid.
However, Talba said a number of challenges militates against grid-connected solar energy.
He listed the challenges to include high costs of installation and wiring; large land area required and the fact that solar power is not dispatchable, that is, cannot respond to automatic generation control signals from the control centre.
Talba also stated that connecting small, isolated villages to a grid can be expensive because of the necessary investment in transmission lines, poles, transformers, and other infrastructure.
“Solar PV power come in relatively small size and are best connected to low voltage lines whereas NBET buys power only at transmission voltage,” he said.
According to him, the National Energy Policy provides for increase renewable share of power supply, adding also that the yet-to-be approved draft renewable energy master plan provides for 18 per cent of the electricity installed capacity from renewable energies not including the existing large hydropower by the year 2020.
He argued that the country should effectively harness solar energy resources and integrate them with other energy resources.
Talba also called for the promotion of the use of efficient solar energy conversion technologies, such as use of photo-voltaic and concentrated solar panels for power generation.
He also called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to increase the percentage of solar energy in the present energy mix.
To encourage investment in renewable energy, Talba listed the incentives that are implied in the feed-in tariff to include guaranteed market; priority grid connection and offtake ; simplified licensing /permit process; concessionary tariff rates and facilitated land acquisition/ site access.
Other recommended policy incentives, according to him, include tax holidays; import duty exemptions; investment tax credits.
He said NERC on its part, had initiated regulatory instruments to drive solar energy in the country.
He identified the regulatory instruments provided by the agency to include feed-in tariff methodology; draft standard power purchase agreement (PPA); draft licensing guideline; interconnection guidelines; draft incentive proposal and embedded generation regulation.
According to him, feed-in tariffs refer to a minimum guaranteed price per unit of produced electricity as approved by the regulator, to be paid to the producer, or as a premium in addition to market electricity prices.
“Regulatory measures are usually applied to impose an obligation on electricity utilities to pay the (independent) renewable energy power producer a price as specified by the government. The level of the tariff is commonly set for a number of years to give investors security on income for a substantial part of the project lifetime. Nigeria is currently assessing the various regulatory, policy and incentive options, given that each approach has its pros and cons,” he added.

Harvesting Sunshine: Clean, Cheap and Consistent Energy

Over-dependence on the use of fossil fuel to generate energy have caused a lot of damage to our climate. The impacts of the by-products of fossil/solid fuels on the livelihood of energy users as well as on the climate are alarming. Global warming has not spared any part of the world as changes in climatic conditions have results ranging from ocean surges, flooding, tsunamis, hurricanes as well as distortions in seasons for crop-cultivation. The outcomes are so overwhelming in many parts of the world as a lot of lives and properties are lost as a result.

Fossil Fuel Energy Vs Alternative (Renewable) Energy.
Fossil fuel energy (also known as Brown Energy) is not renewable in nature, it cost more in the long-run and causes damage to the environment as well as to a lot of lives. House-hold air pollution is reported by the WHO to be responsible for a lot of health problems

Alternative energy (also known as Green Energy) is renewable and clean in nature. Renewable energy is cheaper in the long-run because it does not require high refueling and maintenance cost like machines with moving parts which runs on fossil fuels, though with initial capital cost which is affordable.

Harvesting Free Resources.
Renewable energy is basically derived from nature and nature has been distributed so freely by God. The amount of sunshine in Africa, for instance is considerably more than what is obtainable in other continents like Europe and yet solar energy is optimized in Europe. The earlier we wake up to this opportunity, the more the solutions we will bring to the energy problem in our society.

Affirmation
Renewable energy is clean, cheap and consistent energy than fossil/solid fuels.
Action Point
We will better our society and livelihood if we act and help others escape energy starvation by switching to renewable energy.

Join the solution, end energy starvation.

Ode To The Earth

It was a bright day, the sun shone straight down from the sky in golden streams of sunlight breaking the glaring white of the clouds. The birds chirped, there was a slight breeze and the trees swayed gently in the wind. All was fertile, fresh and green and somewhere in that lush forest a man wandered. That was the sixth day of creation...

And the sun shines once again, but not as benevolent as before as its harsh rays inflict humans with its heat and leaves turn brown under its glare. The skyline once dotted by trees have been replaced with sky scrapers and somewhere over the horizon a thick column of black smoke rises as gas flared occurring. There is the grating sound of electric saws in the background and the gentle thump as century-old trees hit the ground. Oceans teem with dead fish and the rank smell of industrial waste permeates the air...

Man-made craters occupy the ground as the exploration for natural resources continue.
Poisonous gases escape from factory chimneys driving animals from their habitat. The earth decays. Mother Nature loses her age-long battle with humanity as the earth settles into a brown existence devoid of any sign of life except that of humans living in glass walls afraid to step out into the world they have singlehandedly destroyed...

A brown earth...

Someone once said, "We cut down trees to make space for Wi-Fi, trees produce oxygen. When all the trees are gone, we can't breathe technology."
We live in a world dominated by achievements in technology, space, production and even our understanding of the universe. Yet ironically, the universe we seek to understand is the one we destroy.

Although we cannot return to the Garden of Eden, we can and we must together rebuild our world. With our strides in knowledge we can recreate the lost beauty of our planet. It’s time for a green revolution. It’s up to me. It’s up to you.

Climate Change Summit Opens in Lima Peru

Climate Change Summit Lima, Peru

Delegates from 195 countries met in the Peruvian capital on Monday, on the start of a major UN climate conference.
The representatives have gathered for the twelve-day UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-20) conference to work towards drafting an agreement that is set to be signed next year in Paris. The agreement would go into effect in the year 2020.
Some of the members of Carbon Credit Network won a trip to Lima,Peru to be part of the delegates at this conference to fine tune the framework to reduce carbon emission.
The summit was boosted by the agreement between the world largest polluters US and China to reduce their carbon emissions and put a cap on them.

Here's hoping that more pledges and agreements can be made to help reduce the carbon emissions. Also  an increase in funding for research and  social enterprises like CCN to bring cleaner air and a better environment for us all.

Go-green Break-through: U.S and China strengthen force against Climate change!

Advancements are increasing, against all odds, to make our planet kept from hazards of carbon emissions and to generate more money for environment activists (Green ambassadors).

The News
For the first time, China set a target for capping carbon emissions last week in an agreement with the U.S President Barrack Obama, who earlier pledged deeper cuts in green-house-gas emissions.
The presidents of the two world’s biggest economy, U.S President Barrack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping after series of negotiations outlined the accord, which they said would help push other Nations to negotiate a global pact next year in Paris.

Big Impact
The Director of International Programs for the National Resources Defense Council (a Washington-based environmental group) Jake Schmiidt, said no other countries can have as big an impact on the climate debate as the U.S and China.

Affirmation
This new commitment from the two world’s giant economy will without doubt increase the opportunity to access the carbon trading potentials which is a plus for all environment activists.
If these two leading economies can take such deep commitment to cutting down emissins, the rest of the world is signaled to equally promote this advancement.

Action Point
If the approach from our national level does not indicate “help-from-the-top” commitment, we can demonstrate our many individual-levels “help-to-the-top” commitments and make more money solving this global problem.
Do not hesitate to tell more people about the way forward!

Fire Outbreaks Caused By use Of Charcoal And Candles

The Dangers Of Charcoal
The dangers of open flames like charcoal, candles e.t.c have been exposed again by this article in Guardian newspaper, many innocent people are dying because they want to heat up their homes and feed their family, hence the need to encourage renewable, clean and safer energy like Solar for lighting up the house at night and the biofuel for cooking.
In Carbon Credit Network we have many options for people with different needs and price points.  Tinu solar, solar fitila and treasure light kit can be alternatives to the candles and kerosene lanterns being used in various homes across Nigeria.

Here is the article
THE Borno State Fire Services (BOFS) at the weekend said it recorded 92 cases of fire outbreaks in the last ten months of 2014, warning that people should desist from use of “candles and charcoal” to lit and cook during the harmattan season.
Giving the warnings in Maiduguri, the Director of BOFS, Alhaji Musa Hussaini, disclosed that the fire outbreaks occurred between January and October this year with no loss of life.
He however said that two persons were rescued in separate fire  incidents in two separate wards of Maiduguri metropolis, the state capital.
According to him, the fire outbreaks were mostly caused by candle lights, illegal connection of electric wires and negligence on the part of some residents and members of the communities in the state. He advised residents in the state to desist from using charcoal for warming and cooking during this harmattan season that may last till April or May next year.
“The people should be very cautious in using charcoal to get warm in their homes, especially during this harmattan period, because it can endanger their lives and property,” Hussaini said.
He said the Fire Service had procured 61 fire fighting vehicles that could assist in quick response to distressed calls from residents and other members of the communities.
Hussaini said that the agency would employ 100 workers to be drawn from the youth Vigilante group known as Civilian JTF to work under the agency. “This will include 65 fire fighters and 35 drivers with a view to complimenting the shortage of manpower we have experienced.”

Three Boosts Training will add to your Productivity and profits

It is common and true of the saying that “the only constant thing in the universe is change”; it is evidently uncommon but very true that the most consistent thing in growing is learning. The illiterates of this century are not only those people who cannot read or write but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.
The renowned leadership champion, John C. Maxwell appropriately asserted that “man must learn as long as he lives” and that “When man stops learning, right there and then, he stops growing”.
Growing to maximize your potentials of productivity and profits requires training and to train is to;
T-Touch the
R-Reasoning,
A-Attitude &
I-Instinct
N-Notably

Undergoing training will boost your productivity and profits by;

1.     Touching Your Reasoning: it is natural for everyone to want to think in the box not wanting to go the extra mile of thinking outside the box. Training will enable you stretch the thinking faculty like an elastic material and allow you break-through the wall of the box, break old-rules and gain more grounds.

2.     Touching your Attitude: Time and again, it has been proven by numerous success stories that more than hard-work or ambition can earn you, your attitude will earn you much more. If your productivity and profits will ever improve, your attitude towards and at training must also improve to become better.

3.     Touching your Instinct: The instinct is a spontaneous reference for quick decision making. It is practically connected to sets of pre-concluded belief system. Instinct goes a long way in determining what choices to be made, especially the quick-ones. Choices are the constituents that make the outcomes of life, and if you want a good life, you need good choices because the choices you make have their ways of making you back. Training enables you to re-shapen and re-sharpen those sets of belief system that determines the instinct, which in the long-run determines your choices and your life.

AFFIRMATION:
You can boost your productivity and profits by participating in the CCN trainings.
ACTION POINT:
Decide today to participate in the next CCN training at the closest green center to you.
Go-green, grow-great!
